ORAL HEALTH IN SPORTS PEOPLE: RISK FACTORS AND ENAMEL PROTECTIONย
Intense sporting activity carries specific risks to oral health, particularly for tooth enamel. The physiological reduction in salivary flow during physical activity, when combined with the consumption of acidic sports drinks or energy drinks*, significantly increases the vulnerability of teeth to acid attacks.
Furthermore, contact sports or the use of mouthguards can contribute to processes of demineralisation, whilst swimmers or athletes exposed to chlorinated water** are more susceptible to dental wear and acid-induced enamel degradation.
These factors make prevention and the maintenance of a proper oral hygiene routine crucial, with strategies aimed at protecting tooth enamel and counteracting the impact of behaviours and conditions typical of sporting activities.
